Description: The Large Munsterlander (or Grosser Munsterlander) is a breed of gun dog originally from the Munster region in Germany. First registered with the English Kennel club in the early 1970's. This multi-purpose gundog is alert and entergetic, with a strong, muscular body. The Munsterlander works equally well on land and in water.

Colors: Black/White. Head is Solid black witha white blaze, snip or star. The body is white or blue roan with black markings in the form of patches, ticked, flecked or a combination of these.
Coat: Long and dense, neither curly nor coarse.

Care and Training: Brushing every 3 - 4 days. Longer coats brush every other day. Regular grooming is required to keep Seasonal shedding under control.

Activity: The Large Munsterlander is an active breed, but it only needs short spurts of exercise instead of long spans. The breed tends to obtain sufficient exercise when it spends time outdoors.
Special Needs: Regular walks or exercise

Living Environment: The Large Munsterlander is not recommended for apartment life. They are moderately active indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. The Munsterlander wants to play when it is outdoors.
Health Issues: Some lines are prone to hip dysplasia although it is not common in this breed.

History: The Large Munsterlander evolved in Munster, Germany the 1800s. This breed is distinguished from the Small Munsterlander by its size, and coloring. The Large Munsterlander club was formed in 1919 and hails this breed as an all-purpose hunter, capable of pointing, retrieving, and general utility work. It is gradually becoming popular outside Germany. In England it competes with other Continental Gundogs in the HPR (Hunt Point Retriever) Field Trials.
