The 11 Best Dogs for Apartments
Dogs for apartments need less space and less exercise. When
choosing a dog, it is important to get one that is suitable for
your lifestyle and for your home. If you live in an apartment,
the dog will have limited space and restricted access to the
outside.
Dogs most suitable for apartments have a lower energy level
and can get enough exercise from moving about the apartment's
space, along with going on occasional walks outside.
Smaller dog breeds are not necessarily the most suitable for
apartment life; certain larger breeds may do well in an
apartment.
1. Pug
Pugs are small dogs and are very popular due to their
friendly behavior. Pugs are intelligent, so you will need to
come up with a variety of games to avoid boredom. Pugs can do
well in an apartment because they don’t require much exercise.
2. Bichon Frise
The bichon frise is a small breed that looks similar to
poodles. They can weigh up to 7 pounds. They are affectionate
and friendly and will need short walks, so an apartment is
enough for them to be happy and active.
3. Dachshund
The dachshunds, popularly known as the wiener dogs, can live
in an apartment. They are small and have low exercise
requirements, so there is no need for more space.
4. Lhasa Apso
Lhasa Apso is a small sized breed with long hair. These dogs
like to stay in comfortable and warm places and spend a lot of
time napping. They are perfect for apartment life, however don’t
forget to groom them and take them for short walks.
5. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are miniature dogs that weigh up to 3 pounds. They
are perfectly suited in small apartments and don’t have
requirements for a yard due to their size. They have a quiet
temperament that is suitable for apartment life and are happy to
walk around your home for exercise.
6. Toy or Miniature Poodle
Toy or miniature poodles are suitable for apartment life
because of their size. Larger poodles need more exercise and may
be too energetic for an apartment.
7. Pekingese
The Pekingese breed of dogs is among the dogs with the lowest
energy. They are cheerful and friendly and will be more than
happy in a restricted space such as an apartment.
8. Basset Hound
Even if the basset hound is a medium sized dog, he has low
energy and needs very little exercise. They are affectionate but
may become stubborn; however there might be problems with
barking and howling.
9. Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen
The petit basset griffon vendeen is very similar to the
basset hound in size and behavior. In addition, this breed is
known for the wiry hair, which requires more grooming.
These bassets may do well in an apartment, however they might
howl excessively. This breed requires short walks.
10. French Bulldog
The French bulldog is a small sized dog and is as well
tempered as a pug. However, they may be stubborn. They require
walks, but can spend their energy in the apartment as well.
11. Clumber Spaniel
Even if the clumber spaniel is a medium sized breed, his
charming personality can make him a good candidate for an
apartment dog. The clumber may be an excellent hunting dog, but
may adapt to an apartment too. He will require outside walks.
However, if you are jogging on a regular basis and plan to
take your pet along, you may get a higher energy level dog, even
if you live in an apartment.
